How to choose a senior living community in India
A practical, step-by-step approach to choosing a senior living community: care needs, location, costs, contracts and how to decide as a family.
Start with the person, not the property
The right community depends less on amenities than on the person moving in. Before visiting anywhere, write down how your parent spends a typical day, what they enjoy, what they find hard, and what worries them most about moving.
Someone who loves conversation needs something very different from someone who values solitude and a garden. Use that picture as your filter.
Match the level of care to today's needs, and tomorrow's
Independent living suits people who manage on their own. Assisted living adds help with daily tasks. Retirement communities often offer both on one campus.
If your parent is likely to need more help within a few years, ask how a move to higher care works before you commit.
Think about location in travel time, not kilometres
Ask how long it takes to reach the nearest hospital with an emergency department, and how long family will need to visit. Test both journeys at realistic hours.
Understand the money and the contract
Ask for the full fee structure in writing: what is paid upfront, what is refundable, what is charged monthly and what costs extra.
Read the agreement with an independent person, ideally a lawyer, before paying any deposit.
Visit more than once
Go on a weekday morning and again at a weekend or mealtime. Eat there if you can. Talk to current residents without staff present.
Decide as a family
Involve your parent in every step, and agree in advance what would make you say yes or no. A shared checklist makes the final decision calmer and fairer.
